HANAYAKARA(Okinawa JAPAN)
12/13 14:30-15:00
Hanayakara. In Okinawan dialect, “yakara” means “an outstanding or exceptional person.” Combined with the image of girls’ grace and radiance on stage, the name “Hanayakara” draws from the beauty and brilliance of flowers. Founded in January 1997, Hanayakara is a children’s dance troupe formed by young girls who carry the future of Okinawan dance.
Over 26 years later, the group now consists of 14 regular members, ranging from children to adults, and remains active across television, film, and commercial performances. Their performances are rooted in Ryukyuan dance, blending classical movements with creative interpretations inspired by folk songs, nursery rhymes, and popular tunes. While preserving the essence of traditional Ryukyuan choreography, Hanayakara adds entertaining, modern elements to express Okinawa’s unique character. The dancers, adorned in traditional hairstyles and costumes, light up the stage with bright, flower-like smiles. Their lively, continuous-flow performances breathe new life into tradition, presenting a stage that is both dynamic and dazzlingly fresh.
