Stand UP, Seven UP
Jump up! Fly away! The Wild Boar Deity has been guarding the East for seven years. This year, we will take everyone to soar into the universe, continuing to shine in the East.
PASIWALI means “toward the East” in the Amis language of Taiwan's Indigenous peoples. The East is where the sun rises, and it is also the place where lots of Indigenous groups on this island are nurtured.
The Taiwan PASIWALI Festival is dedicated to the cultivation and promotion of Indigenous musicians. Each year, in addition to music creation training camps, it also hosts music competitions, album productions, and international Indigenous music festivals. Through a series of activities, the festival provides a platform for emerging musical talents filled with potential, allowing the world to see Taiwan through music.
The training camp this year invites senior musicians: Gao Chao (Lin Zhiren),Baobu Badulu, Su Tong-da, Sakinu/Ahui (Luo Zhi-hui), and Cemelesai/Axin. These five mentors who will accompany the participants in their growth and foster deep mentor-student relationships. Ultimately, the five mentors will jointly select 10 groups of participants to enter the finals, with live performances recorded for this compilation album.
This compilation includes 10 original tracks with diverse styles. Based on Indigenous languages, the songs hybridize folk, lyrical, rock, gospel, R&B, and Neo Soul genres, writing about the land, ancestors, and hometown, while expressing identity and mission. The PASIWALI compilation has reached its seventh edition in 2024, and these 10 songs not only convey the voices of musicians in this era but also showcase the vastness and depth of Indigenous music.
