【PASIWALI 2022】
PASIWALI means "toward the east" in the Amis language of Taiwan's Indigenous peoples, symbolizing the direction of the rising sun. The eastern region of Taiwan is home to many Indigenous tribes. Through the Taiwan PASIWALI Music Creation Training Camp, the goal is to cultivate more Indigenous musical talent, allowing the world to see Taiwan through music.
The 2022 training camp continues the theme of last year’s festival, "Toward the East, Landing," using the Amis song “PASIWALI (Sunrise in the East)” as the designated piece for production direction. The training draws inspiration from the emotional connection to one's homeland, teaching participants to express their love for their native land in various ways.
From a large pool of applicants, 15 groups were selected for the first phase of creative arrangement training, led by five experienced industry mentors: ao Chao (Lin Zhi-ren), Biung （Wang Hong-En）, Baobu Badulu, Sakinu (Luo Zhi-Hui), and Wu Meng-Hui. They then collectively advanced 10 groups into the second phase of competitive performance training.
The PASIWALI 2022 compilation album features live recordings from the ten selected groups participating in this year’s PASIWALI Grand Prize competition. The album showcases a range of styles, from traditional songs to electronic music, and includes creations in native languages as well as blended linguistic influences. This compilation highlights the promising talents of Indigenous newcomers and showcases strong, diverse creative energy, making it an important work worthy of attention.
